The Bayelsa State Police Command has arrested a suspect linked to the disturbing viral nude video of a young girl that has been circulating on social media platforms.
According to a statement released by the Police Public Relations Officer, Musa Mohammed, an Assistant Superintendent of Police on Friday, September 6, the 24-year-old suspect, identified as God gift Bai from Ogbolomabori in Nembe Local Government Area, was apprehended in Yenagoa on September 3, 2024.
The arrest was made possible by operatives of the Cyber Crime Unit, who carried out a thorough investigation following the directive of Commissioner of Police Bayelsa State Command, CP Alonyenu Francis Idu.
“The Command condemns the act of cyberstalking, especially targeting vulnerable individuals, and reiterates its commitment to curbing such crimes and related offenses within the state.
“Furthermore, the Command urges the public to refrain from online exploitation of individuals. Investigations are ongoing, and the suspect will be charged to court accordingly,” ASP Mohammed said.
The viral video, which has sparked widespread outrage and calls for justice, was shared on various social media platforms, causing immense distress to the young victim and her family.
Meanwhile, a recent investigation has revealed a disturbing tale of revenge and betrayal. The suspect, Bai, is a former lover of the 20-year-old victim, an undergraduate.
The victim had loaned the suspect N30,000 between August 9th and 16th, 2024, with the understanding that he would refund the money. However, he reneged on his promise.
When the victim involved the police, the suspect reluctantly paid back the money. But in a shocking twist, he allegedly sent the victim’s nude videos to bloggers, who circulated them online.
If convicted, the suspect will face 3-5 years imprisonment, a fine of N5-7 million, or Both imprisonment and fine.
