In reaction to the disqualification of Governor Godwin Obaseki, the chairman of the All Progressives Congress in Edo, Anselm Ojezua, has said that he will eventually retain his seat as the leader of the state.
Speaking on Friday, June 12, Ojezua explained that Obaseki’s disqualification by the screening committee does not mean that the governor will not contest in the governorship election at all, adding that it only denotes that he will not be doing so on the platform of the ruling party, Daily Trust reports.
The Edo APC boss said: “They didn’t say he will not contest the election but that he will not contest under the platform of the APC.
“By tomorrow, we will meet and be in a position to make a proper statement on what the future holds for the party in Edo state.”
Earlier, Legit.ng reported that a lot of mixed reactions have continued to trail to the disqualification of Obaseki by a screening committee of the APC ahead of the primary poll in Edo.
One of those who have lent their voice and views to the dramatic development in the state which unfolded on Friday, June 12, is Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, a former national chairman of the ruling party.
In his opinion, Oyegun, through his media aide, Chief Ray Morphy, stated that grave consequences await the APC following Obaseki’s disqualification.
One critical concern Oyegun raised was that the ousting of Obaseki will grant unrestrained access to certain persons to loot the state’s treasury.
The former APC boss said that this development which to him did come as a surprise indicates the death of internal democracy in the party.
He said: “While not a surprise, that disqualification is a clear indication that internal democracy has been murdered in APC, a party which we founded on the principles of fair play and good conscience!
“I daresay that APC will suffer dire consequences in Edo state if this disqualification is not speedily reversed.”
