The attention of the Nigerian Prisons Service, Niger State Command has been drawn to the news making the rounds in some newspapers alleging an outbreak of cholera and tuberculosis in Kotangora prison that led to the death of three inmates.
The report is not only false but malicious and unpatriotic as there is no outbreak of any disease in Kotangara prison or any of our facilities across the state. The two inmates that passed on in the prison were brought in with complications of liver cirrhosis and gastroenteritis.
Though the prison medical team tried to manage the situation, unfortunately their cases were already precarious before their admission. Contrary to the report, it is also important to know that the condemned inmate, Ali Riskuwa alleged to have lost his life in the imaginary outbreak is alive and in safe custody.
The Niger State Command is always committed to ensure safe and humane custody of all inmates in her facilities throughout the state. The management has intensified efforts to ensure proper reformation and rehabilitation of the offender population and eventual reintegration of same into the society as well reformed citizens with something positive to contribute to the development of their community.
