Chelsea legend John Obi Mikel was at his best yet again, starring as Stoke City registered their first win of the new Championship season, beating Preston North End 1-0 at Deepdale on Saturday, allnigeriasoccer.com reports.
The former Nigeria international returned to the Potters starting lineup after he was rested for the Carabao Cup clash with Gillingham FC three days ago.
Lee Gregory’s goal in the 39th minute was enough for Michael O’Neill’s team to get their first three points this term.
Mikel provided the game-winning assist, with his low cross turned in from close range by the Potters number 19.
Prior to that goal, the story of the match was the controversial dismissal of Preston North End’s Tom Barkhuizen midway through the first half.
Mikel is proving to be one of Stoke’s most valuable assets as they aim to return to the Premier League, with the summer signing going the distance in all their matches in the Championship so far.
A Champions League, Premier League and Europa League winner with Chelsea, Mikel is now six games shy of reaching 400 appearances for his English clubs.
