North Korean leader Kim Jong Un apologized on Friday for the lethal shooting of a South Korean official, stating that the incident “shouldn’t have happened” and that he’s “sorry to have disappointed” the South.
In a notice sent to South Korea’s presidential Blue House, Pyongyang said it would “take care not to demolish trust between the North and South.” North Korea also vowed to “prevent this unfortunate incident from happening again.”
North Korean troops had on Thursday shot a South Korean government official and set his body on fire after they found him on a floating object in waters near the rivals’ disputed sea boundary.
According to Seoul’s announcement, the man disappeared from a government ship that was checking on potential unauthorized fishing in an area south of the boundary on Monday, a day before he was found in North Korean waters.
